Cooper’s Daughter – Sophie Newsome (Owner, Founder)
When Sophie Newsome and her husband Rory Tice began experimenting with infusions back in college at SUNY Plattsburgh, they had no idea that just a few years later, their experiments would end up becoming one of the area’s most popular local brands. Cooper’s Daughter is not just a clever name; Sophie Newsome is, in fact, the cooper’s daughter. The distillery is actually one of just two in the country with an actual cooperage on site.“I’ve always been passionate about the farm-to-table movement,” Newsome says. From apples and ramps to walnuts and roses, they work with neighboring farms and foragers for all their ingredients. In terms of being a woman in the business, she says, “there were definitely times when people looked to my dad in a meeting, but thankfully, with experience and confidence, that has changed.”
Cooper’s Daughter Spirits is a woman-owned and family-operated distillery sourcing Hudson Valley ingredients to make seasonal batch spirits. Our distilled spirits are steeped with locally sourced and foraged ingredients, using no artificial colors or sweeteners. Our onsite cooperage handcrafts the barrels we use for aging our bourbons, which are then finished in casks previously used to age local smoked maple syrup and black walnut syrup we tap from our own trees.
